Trauma stems from a life-threatening or physically or emotionally harmful event or set of circumstances that has lasting effects on a person\u2019s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being. In the United States, 61% of men and 51% of women report exposure to at least one lifetime traumatic event.<\/p>\n<h4>Why is recognizing trauma important?<\/h4>\n<p>If you have had any type of trauma in your past that may be affecting your current behavior, it can help to talk to a professional. Trauma, whether experienced in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, can impact the success of surgery and reduce the likelihood of long-term weight loss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professionals can help you get past events or learn to cope so you can have long-term success and happiness after surgery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many resources at Kaiser Permanente and elsewhere that can support you and help you get back on track.\u00a0<strong>You are not alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n        <div class=\"accordion-wrap\">\n<div class=\"accordion-toggle\"><p>Addiction<\/p><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>People who have had surgery are at increased risk for addiction transfer (also called cross addiction). This means trading one compulsive behavior for another one. Addiction can take many forms, such as alcohol, opioids or other pain management medications, and other substances or behaviors. It\u2019s important to understand the risk factors and signs and symptoms of addiction and know how to get help.<\/p>\n<h4>Factors that increase the risk for addiction transfer:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>History of eating disorders, food addiction, or compulsive eating<\/li>\n<li>Family history of substance abuse<\/li>\n<li>Regular alcohol use before surgery<\/li>\n<li>History of chronic pain or overuse of narcotics for pain management<\/li>\n<li>History of trauma, especially childhood sexual abuse<\/li>\n<li>History of depression and other mood or anxiety disorders<\/li>\n<li>Lack of adequate support or feeling isolated<\/li>\n<li>Avoidance of emotions and experiences<\/li>\n<li>History of engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors (binge eating)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Signs and symptoms of addiction may include:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Needing more of the substance or behavior to get the same effect<\/li>\n<li>Doing a behavior or using a substance longer or in higher amounts than planned<\/li>\n<li>Not being able to cut down, even when you want to<\/li>\n<li>An increase in negative consequences caused by the use or behavior (issues with self, family, friends, work, and\/or legal problems)<\/li>\n<li>Others have suggested that you stop or cut down<\/li>\n<li>An increase in hiding or covering up the behavior or use<\/li>\n<li>An increase in feelings of guilt and shame<\/li>\n<li>Craving or having a strong desire or urge for the substance or behavior<\/li>\n<li>Withdrawing from important social, job-related, or recreational activities because of substance use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>A Special Note on Alcohol<\/h4>\n<p>After surgery, the way the body tolerates alcohol changes for many reasons.<\/p>\n<table width=\"834\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">\n<h5><strong>Change<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">\n<h5><strong>Reason<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Faster alcohol absorption<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Your stomach is smaller and\/or bypassed, so you will absorb alcohol much faster.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Alcohol takes longer to process<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">For many reasons, alcohol may take longer to be processed by your liver and clear your system.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>No eating while drinking<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Because the diet after surgery recommends that you do not eat and drink at the same time, alcohol will be absorbed faster because there is no food to slow it down in your digestive system.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Chemical\/hormonal changes from surgery<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">The chemical\/hormonal changes that result from surgery can affect the way your body and brain process and respond to alcohol.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Alcohol is not recommended after surgery. About one-third of patients do report some minor symptoms of depression, which we call \u201cpost-op blues\u201d (like \u201cbaby blues\u201d after giving birth). Post-op blues often happen in the first few weeks or months after surgery when you are still recovering and adjusting to a new way of life. You may ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why did I do this?<\/li>\n<li>What was I thinking?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is not depression, and it\u2019s normal to feel this way. It usually goes away within a couple of months.<\/p>\n<p>Depression can range from very mild to severe. It\u2019s important to be able to recognize symptoms and ask for help if needed, both before and after surgery.<\/p>\n<p>If post-op blues don\u2019t go away or get worse, you may be having symptoms of underlying depression. If you have the following symptoms, it\u2019s important to know that you can get support.\u00a0<strong>Depression is very treatable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Symptoms of depression:<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"list-2-cols\">\n<li>Sadness<\/li>\n<li>Loss of interest<\/li>\n<li>Changes in sleep<\/li>\n<li>Changes in appetite<\/li>\n<li>Social isolation<\/li>\n<li>Helplessness<\/li>\n<li>Hopelessness<\/li>\n<li>Worthlessness<\/li>\n<li>Irritability<\/li>\n<li>Low motivation<\/li>\n<li>Thoughts of suicide<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty concentrating<\/li>\n<li>Increased anger and\/or frustration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are currently on depression medications, it\u2019s also important to let your doctor know.
